Mannie Mendelson took the early first
place lead with a 44.7-pound halibut that he weighed in on
Saturday. Mannie, is a local fisherman that works at the bait store
on the Santa Monica Pier. He plans to have the fish mounted and displayed
in the window at the shop. He would not say exactly where he caught
the Big Barndoor, but did say it was near Santa Monica in very shallow
water when he caught it.

Second place, was a
another big flatty, a 40-pound fish that was caught by Bill Stembridge.
He was fishing with the famous knife maker Frank McGill in 65 feet of
water off of Twin Towers. |
