THE MARINA DEL REY HALIBUT DERBY
THE OLDEST AND LARGEST
FISHING TOURNAMENT IN THE WEST
The
Marina
Del Rey Halibut Derby has been held every year since 1974. On
April 5th & 6th, 2008 will be our 34th
year. The derby is the oldest and largest
fishing tournament in Southern California. The Halibut Derby is the
last 100% non-profit tournament on the west coast. The event has attracted over
a thousand participants and over 300 boats. Entrants have
come from as far as Northern California, Arizona and Nevada. The projected
attendance for the 2008 Halibut Derby is projected to be over 1,000.
The
major attraction to the Halibut Derby is the abundance of valuable
prizes
and the fun competition between anglers and their families. For the
last several years the first, second, third, fourth and fifth
prizes have been several day stays at prime fishing lodges in Mexico and
Alaska. These prizes are donated by the owners of the resorts and
lodge, these usually include four or five nights lodging, all meals, three
days fishing with the fishing tackle provided as well as freezing and
packaging of the caught fish for the return home. Airfare has
been donated by an airline serving that area. Prizes beyond 5th
place consist of thousands of dollars in high quality fishing tackle &
gear and boating equipment, money awards, dinners and fishing trips on
Sportfishing vessels from Southern California.
The objective of the Derby, eminently successful in the
last several years, is to raise funds for charity and conservation.
