History

The first Halibut Derby was started in 1974, the entry fee was $5 and we had 35 anglers. The Club was formed in 1975 as the Marina City Anglers. The name was changed to Marina Del Rey Anglers (MDRA) in 1986 and incorporated as a 501(3)C non-profit on May 14, 1985. The Marina Del Rey Halibut Derby is the oldest fishing competition on the West Coast. The Halibut Derby is entirely operated by dedicated volunteers in order to fund MDRA’s philanthropic and conservation activities. MDRA also operates a White Sea Bass nursery which has grown and released more than 100,000 fish into the Santa Monica Bay since 1997. Members of MDRA have also organized, operated, and hosted the largest Youth Fishing Program on the Pacific Coast since 1983.
