HOW THE DERBY HELPS
The Derby is the main fund raiser for out community programs:
MDR YOUTH FISHING PROGRAM
The goal of the Youth program is to give youth an opportunity to enjoy the sea. For most it's the first time they get to squeamishly bait a hook, excitedly reel in a fish, or see a seal or dolphin. In partnership with other groups they learn what they can do to help keep our oceans clean and healthy.
MDR FISH REARING PROGRAM
MDR works with Scripps/Hubbs to rear fingerling white seabass to juvenile size, and then release them here in Santa Monica Bay. The club has released over 80,000 junveniles white seabass since the program began and is helping in the local resurgence of this fishery.
